BJP had, in its election manifesto, promised to extend the beneficiary base of Ayushman Bharat, one of the largest health insurance schemes in the world that offers Rs 5 lakh health coverage on an annual basis to the poor and vulnerable families, to include elderly persons who are aged 70 years and above regardless of their economic background. This is a significant promise since many elderly people, especially those who retired from private jobs or did their own business, find it difficult to get health insurance and even if they manage to get one, the premium is prohibitively expensive. BJP president J P Nadda took charge of the health ministry on Tuesday. He also held a meeting with senior officials of the ministry who briefed him about ongoing projects. This includes the functioning of Ayushman Bharat Yojana and its potential extension to include senior citizens above 70years.
